Intelligence, healthy sign?
According to a recent study, people with high cognitive abilities have less risk of getting sick.
In the human body, everything is often genetic matter. After the discovery of specific genes to people who stay up late or get up early, Scottish researchers have just made a new discovery: a common gene for intelligence and good health.
To reach this conclusion, scientists from the University of Edinburgh, whose works were published in the medical journal Molecular Psychiatry, viewed 500,000 medical profiles archived in the health database of Scotland. All individuals had provided samples of blood, urine and saliva, and their genetic profile was established. So the researchers were aware of any medical history or the slightest suspicion of diseases (mental, chronic or cardiovascular) on these profiles. Among the participants, 112 151 were selected to determine if there was a possible link between their reasoning abilities and their overall health. As to the experiment, the research team found that people who showed lower cognitive abilities were more likely to develop diseases such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
Mental Health, the study results are more nuanced. If higher cognitive abilities of a person can protect from schizophrenia, bipolar or Alzheimer's disease, it would instead promote autism.
The researchers say that further tests are needed to substantiate this discovery and further explore the correlation between intelligence and physical health. They hope their work will help to better understand the outbreak of some serious diseases and can help prevent them.
