Sleep apnea: a drug soon to breathe easier

Scottish researchers have made a discovery that could revolutionize the lives of all those who suffer from sleep apnea.

These scientists Edinburgh physiology Center have identified an enzyme called AMPK, can regulate the metabolism to breathe better when the oxygen level is too low. Their work, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, could lead to the creation of a new drug as an alternative to current treatments.

In France, sleep apnea affects about 5% of adults. It is due to a relaxation of the muscles of the tongue and throat, which causes involuntary breathing pauses lasting 10 to 30 seconds, several times a night. Blood oxygen level is seen thus decreased, and disrupted sleep, with the key to a greater or lesser tiredness according to the subjects. Currently, existing treatments are limited and restrictive: for some patients, the advance of mandibular splint may suffice. This brace allows the jaw to move slightly the language does not obstruct the back of the throat and lets spend the air. Second line, a night ventilation equipment is indicated, but still noisy and restrictive for patients and their families.

The discovery of this enzyme may therefore permit the development of a drug to treat sleep apnea and improve the lives of patients.
