Skin cancer: banana fight against the disease?
A study published February 8, reveals that human skin and banana skin produce the same enzyme when exposed to sunlight.
And if our skin resembled that of a banana? Researchers at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Switzerland, highlighted the similarities between aging and the appearance of brown spots on a banana skin and different stages of development of skin cancer. Published in the German journal Angewandte Chemie, the study results indicate that when the banana skin and human skin are stressed by the sun, they both produce an enzyme called tyrosinase. It is she who is responsible for the appearance of brown spots on the fruit and tan on our skin. "As we age, bananas are covered with black spots caused by the presence of an enzyme, tyrosinase. This is a natural process of browning of certain bodies, such as food. This same enzyme also plays a role in melanoma type of skin cancer, "explain the researchers in their statement. From this observation, the Tzu-En Lin chemist has developed an imaging technique for measuring the presence of tyrosinase in the skin. "The research was carried out first on ripe fruit, then on samples of cancerous tissue (...) They have proven that the level of presence and distribution of the tyrosinase enzyme provide information on the stage of the disease," says the head of the team that conducted the study, Hubert Girault. In stage 1 cancer, the enzyme is not present. In Stage 2, it is highly visible and homogeneously distributed. Finally, in stage 3, it manifests itself heterogeneously. With this new technique, scientists could detect early cancer cells and thus help increase the chances of recovery of skin cancer. "The next step will be to use the same scanner to visualize tumors and eliminate (...) Our first laboratory tests have shown that the cells could be destroyed using our tool," says Hubert Girault reminiscent that when melanoma is diagnosed early, the survival rate at five years is 86% for men and 92% for women.
