Breast cancer is today the most common female cancer. Scientists at Inserm and Institut Gustave Roussy have examined the risk factors that can favor the appearance of this disease.
According to them, after menopause, "behavioral" factors are largely responsible. 53.5% of post-menopausal cancers are therefore due to lifestyle, and therefore could be avoided with appropriate behavior.
What are the behavioral risk factors identified in this study? First, there are an unbalanced diet, or taking hormone treatment in connection with menopause. But alcohol (at a rate of more than one drink per day), or overweight.
To reach these conclusions, scientists studied data from a cohort of 67,634 women aged 42-72 years. Among them, there were 497 patients with breast cancer before menopause, and 3138 after menopause. The authors of this study published in the International Journal of Cancer therefore advocate to act in prevention to eliminate these risk behaviors.
