Men more affected than women by cancers related to oral sex

Nearly two oropharyngeal cancers (throat and mouth) of 3 are related to the practice of fellatio or cunnilingus because of papillomavirus (HPV).

Men are twice as likely as women with this type of cancer as a result of the frequency of oral sex sex, according to results of a US study presented this weekend in Washington at the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

The immune system of weaker men

Infection with HPV is very common and most people eliminates one or two years but less men than women. Among them, the immune system would be lower, which would make them more vulnerable.

HPV does not trigger the mutations responsible directly to the tumor, but causes changes in the cells it infects the throat.

The number of partners increases the risk of cancer

The analysis shows that these widespread practices begin at a young age and the number of new partners is also higher.

At equal number of partners, men are much more likely to be infected with HPV than women, explained Gypsyamber D'Souza, assistant professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Women who have had more partners for vaginal intercourse had less risk of infection with HPV transmitted by oral practices. This may suggest that a first vaginal HPV exposure gives better protection triggering a strong immune response

Remember that oral sex increases the risk of oropharyngeal cancer 22%, according to a study published in January in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This type of cancer has increased 225% in 20 years.
